Research Background
The Burning Season is a practice-led research project that emerged from my personal concern about climate
change and the urge to explore solutions using the documentary form. The film aims to illustrate complex concepts,
such as carbon trading through the use of Balinese shadow puppet motifs to situate the mechanism in the
Indonesian political and environmental context and used animation to distil the complex process in an accessible
form for international audiences of any age. I also developed Balinese-style animations to depict the impact of
deforestation on climate change and the growth of global carbon markets.
Research Contribution
The film, study guide and website were the first publicly released documentary outputs to explore the impact of
deforestation on climate change and to depict a carbon trading deal in action. The DVD is widely used in the
education system to encourage young people to take their own action in response to deforestation and climate
change. The film was translated into Bahasa and distributed in Indonesia. The documentary was recently purchased
by Pivot TV, a new "disruptive TV" service in the USA focusing on social advocacy, and formed the basis of a
subsequent deal with Microsoft Partners in Learning to make a follow-up film about young people and climate
change, which resulted in Rise of the Eco-Warriors.
