Mistrals - France

A Bottom-Up initiative with strong official
support
Raised as a priority in 2006 by the French scientific
community.
Originally supported by the meteorology community was
soon adopted by the rest of geophysical sciences.
Really started in 2008 and since was supported by a
consortium of French agencies with 1 – 2 MEuros/years
(aside official fund raising at the National Agency for
Research or negotiations at EU)
A Bottom-Up initiative with strong scientific
motivations
and societal stakes

Highly urbanised and growing…
High concentration of people in coastal area:
Inhabitants:
~450 millions in 2000  >550 millions in 2025
Tourism :
158 millions in 1996  300 millions in 2025
(1/4 of world’ tourism!!)

• In 2020, cereal yields may
decrease by 10% in Marocco for
normal years and by 50% in time
of dryness.
• In Algeria, decreases by 5.7% and
14% are expected for normal
years. Vegetable yield may
decrease by 10 to 30% in Algeria
and by 40% in Marocco.
• Climate Change will also reduce
the productivity of grazing fields.

Euro-Mediterranean Cooperation through
ERANET joint activities and beyond
Main principles
• Long-term perspective of co-ownership
• High political engagement of participating member countries
• Important pilot to support a stable Euro-Mediterranean
cooperation under article 185 or another legal form.
• Joint activities based on two calls, responding to real needs.
• Demand-driven calls and projects
• Enhancing innovation through supporting research, clustering,
involvement of enterprises, capacity building, mobility.

Farewell to the 4th International
ChArMEx Workshop
• With the summer 2012, 2013 and 2014 SOPs CharMex has
passed important milestones
• Some observations actions are still on-going
• The number of actions and the database gathered are
impressive
• Now, it is time for exploitation of the data, for building links
between the WP, for overpassing the limits of actions,
funding agencies…etc
• It is time to try to contribute answering the original questions
which are funding the CharMEx/Mistrals
• There will be a future for CharMEx action if this is
accomplished
