Tanker Shipping - Clean and Efficient
Energy security and climate change are the two most
significant challenges facing humanity.
The tanker industry therefore finds itself in the unenviable position of
having to consider how it meets both these challenges at the same time;
the challenge of maintaining an efficient and secure supply of energy as a
vital link in the supply chain, while at the same time having to consider
how it will meet the challenges of reducing air emissions and minimising
its subsequent contribution to global climate change.
But tankers are also associated with one other significant form of
pollution...

Ship design (i.e. hull/propeller improvements, wind drag, etc.)
Alternative energies (i.e., biodiesel, solar, wind, fuel cell)
Air pollution (MARPOL) – SOx, NOx and Particulate Matter (PM)
– Regulating the cause – INTERTANKO; ‘cleaner fuel’
