What is Global Warming?
 Global Warming is the increase of
Earth's average surface temperature due
to effect of greenhouse gases, such as
carbon dioxide emissions from burning
fossil fuels or from deforestation, which
trap heat that would otherwise escape
from Earth. This is a type
of greenhouse effect.
Global Warming – What is it?
Rise in earth’s temperature
Results from changes in the
natural environment
Caused by too much carbon
dioxide
What is the greenhouse effect?
The burning of fossil fuels
and forests increases CO2
in the atmosphere.
Increases in CO2 cause
more heat to be trapped in
the earth's atmosphere.
As a result, global
temperatures are rising.
Warmer temperatures raise
sea levels (by melting more
ice) and decrease
agriculture output (by
affecting weather patterns).
What are greenhouse gasses?
 Greenhouse gasses are gasses are in the
earth’s atmosphere that collects heat and
light from the sun. With too many
greenhouse gasses in the air, the earth’s
atmosphere will trap too much heat and the
earth will get too hot. As a result people,
animals, and plants would die because the
heat would be too strong.
Burning of fossil fuels
 The burning of fossil fuels
releases Carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere.
 In the past 150 years, burning
fossil fuels has caused a 25 %
increase in Carbon dioxide
emissions.
How Global Warming Works
Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)
Example of the
Greenhouse Effect
The Sun’s energy
passes through the
car’s windshield.
This energy (heat)
is trapped inside
the car and cannot
pass back through
the windshield,
causing the inside
of the car to warm
up.
What’s the difference
between “global warming”
and “climate change”?
Difference
GLOBAL WARMING
is the increase of the
Earth’s average surface
temperature due to a
build-up of greenhouse
gases in the atmosphere.
CLIMATE CHANGE
is a broader term that
refers to long-term
changes in climate,
including average
temperature and
precipitation.
Effects of Global Warming
Rising Sea Level
Increased Temperature
Habitat Damage and
Species Affected
Changes in Water Supply
Impacts of Climate Change
 Temperature rise
 Precipitation(Rainfall)
 Soil Moisture
 Changing Habitats
 Sea Level Rise
 Ocean Currents
Burning of Fossil Fuels
Pollution from coal,
natural gas, and oil
Causes of global warming.
 Due to the increase in the atmosphere of greenhouse gas
concentrations like
 Water vapor.
 Carbon dioxide (CO2).
 Methane.
 Ozone.
 Nitrogen oxides.
 CFC’s.
 Deforestation increases the harshness of global warming as
well.
 Greenhouse gases are those gases that contribute to the
greenhouse effect . The largest contributing source of
greenhouse gas is the burning of fossil fuels leading to the
emission of carbon dioxide.
Effects of global warming
 More carbon dioxide ->
increase in plant growth.
 The increase in
temperature -> rise in sea
level from melting glaciers
and polar ice caps (adds
0.2 mm annually)
 Rising temperatures will
also cause drier conditions
in many important
agricultural regions.
Health & Global Warming
- Extreme temperatures can
directly cause the loss of life
(ex: 35,000 people died
during heat wave in Europe,
Aug‘03.)
- Warmer weather provides an
ideal breeding environment
for mosquitoes. Diseases
such as West Nile will be
more common.
Health & Global Warming
- High temperature
can increase
pollution of water
and air, which
harms the human
body.
Tropical Diseases
 Global Warming increases
drought which lessens the
supply of clean drinking
water.

Cholera
Tropical Diseases
 It increases temperature
providing an ideal breeding
environment for mosquitoes.



Dengue fever
Malaria
Yellow fever
What’s being done now to
reduce our emissions?
Wind Power
Solar Power
Fuel-Efficiency
What can you do to help
solve the problem?
Simple Things To Do
Turn off your computer or the TV
when you’re not using it.
Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.
Keep rooms cool by closing the blinds, shades, or
curtains.
Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Use compact fluorescent bulbs.
Simple Things To Do
Dress lightly when it’s hot instead of turning up
the air conditioning. Or use a fan.
Dress warmly when it’s cold instead of turning
up the heat.
Offer to help your parents keep the air filters on
your AC and furnace clean.
Walk short distances instead of asking for a
ride in the car.
Plant a tree.
Recycle.
Am I responsible for global warming?
Forty people in
automobiles
closely spaced
apart
on the street
Forty people
representative
transit riders
seated together in
one bus-sized
space.
How To Prevent
Global Warming:





Plant trees
Conserve energy:
(examples: 1. use low-energy, lowwater-use washing machines, 2. use a
solar heated system for hot water)
Buy energy efficient products
Buy products that have reuse able or
recyclable packaging
Reduce use of car (walk instead)
3R’s
of Saving Mother Nature
Reduce,
Reuse,
Recycle!
