Definition of Scope of CC related statistics
Include environmental, social and economic data
that measure…
• Greenhouse gas emissions
• Drivers: human caused sources and causes of emissions
2
Definition of Scope of CC related statistics
• Mitigation: efforts of humans to avoid
the consequences
3
Definition of Scope of CC related statistics
• Adaptation: efforts to adapt to these consequences
4
Consider what will be needed in the
future…
Impacts
5
Scope of CC related statistics
• Impacts: on human and natural systems
6
Health statistics
•
Re-occurrence of diseases no
longer in Europe (malaria)
•
New diseases
•
Changes in current trends
“Extreme events”
(heat waves, storms, etc.)
7
Water
… or the lack of it
And resulting land use
land cover changes,
and soil degradation.
8
Crop production patterns
9
Jobs…
“Green Jobs”

Population / Demographics / Migration
Types of “households”

“Eco-Industries”
Environmental Goods and Services
• Current classifications - goods and services,
employment, consumption - make these things difficult
to find
– Need to consider making these easier to identify by revising
classifications?
13
Challenges
• Need to be able to connect/combine different data sets
Physical flow accounts – combined (NAMEA-type)
see SEEA – CF 2012
14
How to connect other data sets?
Is this the role of the NSOs?
15
Georeferenced data / mapping
16
Recommendations on CC related statistics
4. NSOs must improve the contribution of official statistics to
climate change analysis – facilitate access to the existing
information.
• Bring together and disseminate CC related statistics
• Cooperate with scientific organizations in the dissemination
• Facilitate access to microdata
17
Recommendations on CC related statistics
5. The usefulness of the existing environmental, social and
economic statistics for climate change analysis should be
improved.
• Review statistical programs and data collections from the
view of the data needs for climate change analysis – can the
data be used for measuring CC related issues
• Lack of coherence among data sets and difficulties in
matching data from different statistical domains. Link socioeconomic data sets with climate observations.
• Geo-referencing all relevant data – for spatial analysis
• New geographical areas – not only administrative areas
• Provide detailed data for analysis – food production, water
use, health and diseases, tourism, population, pop. growth
18
Recommendations on CC related statistics
6. NSOs should review the key data needs of climate policy
makers and analysts in their country and consider
development of new statistics.
• To analyze drivers, develop economic information to climate
change related issues, such as environmental economic
(SEEA) accounts.
• Contribute to efforts to monitor biodiversity and ecosystems
• Develop data on the use of economic instruments in
mitigation efforts – carbon taxes, tradable permits, subsidies
• Develop statistics and indicators for adaptation and
adaptive capacity – resilience, risks and vulnerability of
population groups and preparedness to withstand adverse
impacts of CC
