Cell Structure Wrap-up and
Review
Writing Assignment
Get out your writing assignment outline.
 Switch with a partner for 3-4 minutes
and check for the following:

– Cell analogy (ex: The cell is like a school.)
– 5 cell organelles and their function
– 5 analogous structures, their functions and
how they relate to a specific cell
organelle.
Example Outline

The cell is like a school. (Main idea)
– Nucleus = control center of the cell
• Principal = command center for the school;
instructs workers on how to do their jobs
– Endoplasmic reticulum = transport of fats
and proteins throughout the cell; how
molecules/substances get from place to
place
• Hallways = how students move through the
building/are “transported” from class to class
Converting your outline to
paragraph form
Use your outline to guide your writing.
 Outline: Nucleus = Control center

» Principal = command of school’s function

Sentence: “The principal controls and
manages the school’s functions much
like the nucleus controls the cell’s
functions and processes.”
Writing wrap-up
Use the next few minutes to begin
constructing the rough draft for your
writing assignment.
 Your rough draft is due tomorrow before
you take your quiz.
 Final draft is due on Friday.

Enzyme animation

Enzymes -- test-taking review

If you think the following statement is:
– True: Pat your head
– False: Rub your belly
– Not sure: Do both
Enzymes are proteins.
TRUE! (Pat your head!)

TRUE, enzymes are proteins!
More test-taking with enzymes…

If you think the following statement is:
– True: Show “spirit fingers”
– False: Cross your fingers.
Enzymes speed up the rate of chemical
reactions by raising the activation energy.
FALSE! (Cross your fingers.)

The statement was false!

True statement: Enzymes speed up the
rate of chemical reactions by
LOWERING the activation energy.
Cell Structure Review
1. What is the basic unit of life? CELLS
 2. What is the nucleus?

– Organelle located in the center of the cell

3. What is the function of the nucleus?
(What does it do?)
– Control center of the cell
– Stores DNA
Cell Structure Review

4. What are two organelles found in plant
cells but not in animals cells?
– Chloroplasts (chlorophyll)
– Cell Wall
5. Which organelle is the “powerhouse” of the
cell? MITOCHONDRIA
 6. The town hall of a city is similar to which
organelle in an animal cell?

– NUCLEUS

7. What is the MAIN difference between
prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
– Prokaryotes – NO NUCLEUS
– Eukaryotes – true nucleus

8. List two things that ALL CELLS have
in common.
– Cell membrane and cytoplasm

9. List two functions of the cell
membrane.
– 1. Surrounds the cell
– 2. Controls what goes in/out of the cell

10. What is the function of a lysosome?
– THINK “LYSOL”
