Section 2.2
Music Categories
Musical Categories
• Like the instruments used to make it, music
itself can be categorized in many ways.
• Genre- a particular type of music with a
distinctive form or sound
– Ex: Jazz is a genre of music
Musical Categories
• Another way to category music is by the
musical style
• Musical Style- a form of expression within a
musical genre
• Ex: Grunge rock is a style of rock genre
Musical Categories
• One of most common ways to classify music is
to use three broad categories.
• Traditional
• Popular
• Classical
Music Categories
• How do you know if it’s traditional, popular, or
classical music after you’ve listened to it?
• There are certain distinctions that some with
making the right decision.
• Clues are right infront of you sometimes
especially when you go to a concert.
• For example, torn blue jeans are as unlikely to
be seen at the opera as formal clothes to a
rock festival.
Musical Categories
• Even though clothes can help you decide
between different categories, the lines are
slowly getting blurred over time.
• Sometimes casual clothing is often worn, at
least by audience members to outdoor
classical concerts.
What type of concert is this? How do
you know? What characteristics help
you figure this out?
Musical Categories
• A different way to categorize music can be to
determine the larger social and cultural
context.
• Who uses the music? How and why was it
created?
• Finding out the larger context of it can help
you understand and appreciate the music
better.
Traditional Music
• Traditional Music- informal music that develops within
and is strongly associated with a cultural group or
region.
• Sometimes referred to as “folk music.”
• This is closely tied with language, environment, and
social customs.
• This is the oldest and most widespread category of
music
• Almost all customs and peoples have developed some
type of traditional music.
• This can be used in ceremonial, religious, celebratory,
or entertainment purposes.
• Born in 1902 in Payneville, Alabama, just outside of Livingston in
Sumter County, Vera Hall grew up to establish one of the most
stunning bodies of American folk music on record
• John Avery Lomax, ethnomusicologist, met Hall in the 1930s and
recorded her for the Library of Congress. Lomax wrote that she
“had the loveliest voice [he] had ever recorded.” The British
Broadcasting System played Hall’s recording of “Another Man Done
Gone” in 1943 as a sampling of American folk music. The Library of
Congress played the song the same year in commemoration of the
75th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. In 1945, Hall
recorded with Byron Arnold. In 1984, the recordings were released
as a Collection of Folksongs entitled Cornbread Crumbled in Gravy.

Popular Music
• Popular Music- music intended for a wide audience,
often featuring prominent melodies.
• This is the primary form of entertainment and can
also be participatory.
• Audience members are invited to clap and sing along.
• Popular music has its roots in traditional and classical
music.
• Contemporary society often identifies popular music
with the commercial aspects of music.
• This is a good example of YOUR music.

• What is the difference between Popular music
and Traditional music?
Classical Music
• Classical Music- style of “art” music that stands apart
from traditional or popular music.
• Classical musicians usually have formal training, and
performances tend to be more refined and less
spontaneous.
• Audience members usually don’t participate and it is
not encouraged.
• Classical music traditions were originally associated
with the more educated members of society.
• At one time, only the wealthier citizens and leaders
were allowed to access this category of music.

• Listen to the 4 examples and try to place them in the
correct category.
• In the first two categories, identify the following:
