How do I find a book
using the
Education Centre Library’s
Catalogue?
Accessing the Catalogue:
Go to the Education Centre Library’s website
at www.eclibrary.ca and click on Catalogue
This is the screen you will see
when you search the Catalogue.
Choose Your Search Type from the
dropdown menu. Most people like to
start with a Keyword search.
If you have a topic, search by KEYWORD
Identify the main idea(s) of your topic (these are your keywords)
Try to keep each keyword to one word or a short phrase
Example: depression, drug abuse
Type your topic in the search box and click on Go

Click on More
Information for the
Item Record
Call Number
Number of titles
Results are sorted by
date of publication
Item Information Record
Library indicates
which library the
item belongs to.
Call Number shows the
item’s “address” on the
Library’s shelves.
Location tells you where to
go in the Library to find the
item and whether or not it in.
Canadore College and
Nipissing University have a number
of different campuses:
Education Centre Library
→ main campus library for Canadore & Nipissing
Canadore - Commerce Court
→ smaller branch library at the Commerce Court campus
Nipissing – Brantford
→ collection is for the Brantford campus only
Nipissing – Muskoka
→ collection is for the Muskoka Campus only
E-books
→ click on
to access an e-book through the Catalogue
Location tells you where to go in the
Education Centre Library to find the item:
Standard shelving location
→ means the regular Library shelves
Circulation Desk or Multimedia-Circulation Desk
→ ask at the Circulation Desk (front of the Library)
Reference Material
→ the low shelves near the Information Desk
AV Collection
→ located at the back of the Library
Electronic Resources
→ click on the link icon to access the item online
Material has been checked/charged out
→ means the item is not available at this time
You can also search by TITLE
Enter all or part of a title
You can omit common words such as The, A, Le, La, Of, etc.
Choose Title from the dropdown menu
Enter your title words in the search box and click on Go
Example: Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar”
You can search by AUTHOR
Choose Author from the dropdown menu
Enter the first & last names, or just the last name in the
search box, and click on Go
Keyword vs. Subject Search
Keyword searches and subject searches are not the
same.
A keyword search involves describing your topic (i.e.,
“climate change”).
A subject search is based on very specific subject
headings and a successful search requires the exact
wording.
To search for materials on “climate change” using the
subject search, the correct search term is “climatic
change” because that is the specific subject heading.
Subject searches are still effective, but only if you know
the proper heading.
