_Mrs. Searing’s Top Ten
The most important things for
you to know about your child’s
year in this new class
Beverly Elementary School | 2016-17
10. A little bit
about who I
am…
Mrs. Searing
• I’ve taught first through sixth grade and settled
in the intermediate grades. I love to walk and
often walk to and from school.
• I have two lovely grandchildren. I spend as
much time on the weekends and during the
summer as possible with them.

9. We are
building a
classroom
community.
My Management System & Procedures.
• We begin each day with a Morning Meeting. This is a time when
we greet each other, share with each other and build a respectful
classroom community.
• The fourth grade team has adopted the following classroom
management plan for students who are making poor choices.
1st Time: Caution: Yellow - Warning
2nd Time: Stop: Red - Time-out & student fills out
“Refocus form.”
3rd Time: TIME OUT in Designated Area - Parent contact (child may call
home) and/or possible loss of
recess or office.
4th Time or Severe Disruption - Incident report/office referral

8. We provide
a consistent
schedule for
learning.
• A daily schedule is provided for
students. From the Morning Meeting we
move to specialists (Monday – library,
Tuesday & Thursday – PE, Wednesday &
Friday – Music). Next is language arts,
math, lunch & recess, SSR, reader’s
workshop, recess, quiet time, planner
and then social studies.

7. We have
New
Standards
• We will strive to be challenged in a studentcentered, CCSS-conscious environment.
• Lesson objectives (“I can” statements) are
recorded in journals. Examples are copied into
journals as well as practice work. Journals should
go back-and-forth from school to home to help
students study for tests.
• Reading and math overviews can be found on our
classroom website. These are useful tools for
parents.

Evidence, Please!
6. Evidence
• Scoring guides provide students with criteria for
meeting the goals we are working towards.
• It is very important that students complete all
work. I won’t grade practice work, but it does
count towards assignment completion scores.
Grades will come from assessments, final drafts
and projects.
• Scholastic News, MobyMax, TenMarks, our
classroom website & SpellingCity provide a
more individualized skills approached.

5. We are
learning
math –
deeply!
• Homework: It is very important that students work on
math fluency (multiplication facts). Knowing these will
not only help them this year, but in years to come.
Homework consists of multiplication/division facts,
reading log, studying weekly spelling words and late or
unfinished classwork.
• Homework is recorded in the student’s planner. Please
ask to see these daily and initial that you’ve checked
completed homework.
• This is practice, so we will go over them together and
review the ones they had problems with.
• Math Grades will come from math assessments.

4. Data Notebooks
• Students will be asked to call home to give
parents a heads-up about unfinished work.
Unfinished work becomes homework and
students should get these turned in as quickly
as possible.
• Completed work will be gathered into a
portfolio or Data Notebook. This is a collection
of you & your child’s goals, progress towards
those goals, reflections, and student work.
Parents are encouraged to view these often.
Please take time to make them a powerful and
meaningful tool.
Beverly Elementary School | 2016-17
• We will use technology as much as possible this
year.
3. Technology
• Students will have access at school and home to
their Google accounts.
• Khan Academy provides practice and video tutorials
on the math concepts we’ll cover this year.
• SpellingCity provides games to practice our
vocabulary units.
• TenMarks provides practice, enrichment and video
tutorials on math concepts.
