REPAIR AMERICA
PROTECT, PRODUCE, PROSPER
The BlueGreen Alliance’s Repair America campaign is
working in states around the country to educate and mobilize
union members about the need to address climate change, to
put Americans to work fixing energy, water, natural gas,
transportation, and communications systems, and to prepare
our communities for the impacts of climate change.
• The BlueGreen Alliance unites 14 of our country’s
largest unions and environmental organizations.
• Through our Repair America campaign, we are
committed to harnessing the power and energy of
nearly 15 million members and supporters to build
a cleaner, fairer economy that creates quality jobs
for working people while also responding to the
threat of climate change.
IT’S TIME TO REPAIR AMERICA
•
•
Fixing our nation’s crumbling
infrastructure — energy,
transportation, water, and
buildings like schools and
hospitals — is a key part of
the solution, and it will create
quality family-sustaining jobs.
To do this, we need to invest
in our infrastructure to
prepare for and help prevent
climate change. The longer
we wait, the more it will cost
our environment, our
economy and our children.
IT’S TIME TO REPAIR AMERICA
ENERGY
America’s energy transmission
system needs rebuilding, we
need to upgrade our buildings
and water systems to use
those resources more
efficiently, and we need to start
producing more renewable
energy — and manufacturing
more of the parts and
components in America.
IT’S TIME TO REPAIR AMERICA
ENERGY
•
•
•
•
Provide certainty for renewable energy
manufacturers and developers by providing
sustained, long-term support to develop
these industries here in the U.S.;
Upgrade our buildings, factories, and homes
to use energy as efficiently as possible by
utilizing technologies like combined heat and
power;
Provide vital investments to upgrade and
enhance energy transmission (electrical grid)
and wastewater and drinking water systems.
Upgrade the natural gas pipeline distribution
networks, specifically those that move gas
throughout our cities.
PLATFORM ON INDUSTRIAL
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
•
•
U.S Manufacturing
provides nearly 12
million jobs & $1.8 trillion
in GDP
US accounts for 18.2%
of global manufactured
products (China
accounts for 17.6%)
•
•
Energy Efficiency can
reduce costs, boost
productivity and
efficiency within the
industrial sector
McKinsey & Company’s
July 2009 report:
•
•
We can reduce
industrial energy
consumption 21% by
2020
Industry would save $47
Billion per year

BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS AND
FOSTERING DEMAND
•
•
•
Build on President
Obama’s industrial energy
efficiency Executive Order
by working to double CHP
& WHR
Include industrial energy
efficiency in EERS and
cleaner energy standards
Incorporate Industrial
Energy Efficiency into
Clean Air Act Proposals
• Allow rate basing to
help achieve ROI
• Stimulate Demand

SEEING THE BENEFITS FIRST HAND
•
•
•
United Steelworkers have seen how the addition of combined heat and
power technologies to ArcelorMittal's Indiana Harbor steel facility has cut
annual energy costs by nearly $20 million, while creating 360
manufacturing and construction jobs and retaining 6,000 workers at the
facility by lowering production costs of steel by $5 per ton.
In Springboro, Ohio, IUE-CWA members helped one Cobasys identify
$67,000 in energy bill savings through a "treasure hunt" at its advanced
battery manufacturing plant.
United Autoworkers at Chrysler's truck and minivan assembly complex in
St. Louis also have seen how a comprehensive energy assessment
identified improvements to their boiler systems that saved $627,000 in
energy costs each year and paid back investment cost in the measures in
just over two months.
