– Guided Reading Groups- This grouping is flexible, and may change throughout the year.
Text is chosen at an appropriate level for each group.

Reading at Home
Your child will be responsible for reading five nights per week and
recording it on a weekly log. For the first marking period they will need to
read 15 minutes each night.

• Weekly list follows a phonemic pattern or phonics
rule
• 12 words each week + 2 word part studies
Writing
• Narrative, Opinion, Informational, Research
• Writing pieces will be aligned to Pennsylvania Core

– Please do not schedule any vacations or appointments during this time.

Musical Instrument Lessons (Band & Orchestra)
– Students are responsible for making up work they miss (usually at
recess)
– Lessons for Band (Day 1); Lessons for Orchestra (Day 6)
Birthday Treats
- Contact me prior to sending in snack
- Please be aware of allergies.
- Please do not send in birthday invitations to be
passed out.
Student Responsibilities
• Homework books, getting mail, handing in homework
• Students will transition into taking class notes on their own
• Students are expected to get class work finished in time
permitted
• Student Organization
– Organization is crucial for 5th grade
– Desks will be orderly and clean at all times (Weekly checks)
• Signing-Out
– Sign out sheet is for restroom, nurse or office.
– Class breaks for restroom after special
– Your child is welcome to have a water bottle on their desk during the day.
How You Can Help Your Child
• Read to your child OR with your child
• Write a note to your child – put it in their homework book or
lunchbox
• Help your child get a public library card
• Pre-test your child before scheduled tests (Review study
guides, too!)
• Make sure your child eats breakfast
• Give your child a special place at home to do homework
• Help study math facts
• Use resources on-line for practice and review
How You Can Help Me
• Classroom donations - list on my website
• Chaperones for field trip
• Volunteers
– Help with social events or classroom clerical work or in the
classroom with Language Arts and Math
– Look for details to come home in September or October
• Communicate on a regular basis
• Please send any money/checks in an envelope with
