What is CIRCLE?
Climate Impact Research
Coordination for a Larger Europe Mediterranean Group
A European Networking
project aiming at implementing a
European Research Area (ERA) in
the field of climate change and
adaptation research, funded by the
EU - FP6 programme
35 organisations representing:
19 countries as « partners »
13 countries as « observers »

Objectives
Climate Impact Research
Coordination for a Larger Europe Mediterranean Group
Aims at establishing cooperation among
national programmes of European countries
By promoting information exchange,
alignment of research agenda's and the
setting up of trans-national research calls

The Med Call
Climate Impact Research
Coordination for a Larger Europe Mediterranean Group
Pilot call launched in 2007 : “coastal zones and
integrated water management”.
Five funding partners from France, Galicia, Israel,
Italy and Portugal.
Minimum 2 partner countries + 1 non partner
Mediterranean country
Projects selection in two steps: scientific excellence, and
relevance for policy makers

Selected sub-themes
The Scientific Advisory Board classified the
retained proposals according to the following
themes:
Marine resources,
Integrated water management,
Integrated water management in coastal zone
(biology),
Integrated water management in coastal zone
(physico-chemistry)

The projects
Climate Impact Research
Coordination for a Larger Europe Mediterranean Group
ACIDBIV: The integrated impacts of marine acidification, temperature and
precipitation changes on bivalve coastal biodiversity and fisheries: how to adapt?
AQUIMED: Participatory design of adaptive groundwater management strategies
and instruments in Mediterranean coastal water scarce areas as a response to
climate change
CANTICO: Climate and local ANthropogenic drivers and impacts for the TunisIan
COastal area.
CLIMBIOMEDNET: Climate change influence on biodiversity, goods and services of
Mediterranean lagoons.
CLIMWAT: Assessing and managing the impact of climate change on coastal
groundwater resources and dependent ecosystems.
INTERMED: The impact of climate change on Mediterranean intertidal
communities: losses in coastal ecosystem integrity and services.
MEDCODYN: Climate change impacts in transitional water systems in the
Mediterranean.
WATERKNOW: Integrated Water Management in Coastal Drainage Basins:
challenges and adaptation strategies within the framework of climate change.

Policy Issues
Climate Impact Research
Coordination for a Larger Europe Mediterranean Group
To facilitate uptake by decision-makers, the
project results will be linked to the relevant
climate change impact and adaptation policy
issues.
Examples:
socio-economic response to Climate Change
risks management/vulnerability assessment
stakeholders participation…

Tools & Synergies
At the kickoff meeting, there was a
demand for exchange of information
between the projects on tools and facilities
that will be used or that are available for
use
Several projects will have the possibility to
cooperate and develop synergies
