Transcript Doujin Presentation v2
A subculture of Japan based on fan work and
original productions
Popularity
of series contributes to fan work, based
off an existing series.
Fan work consist of anything ranging from pictures,
videos, written work, music, etc.
This is often done not for profit, and should be
done for interest of the original series.
Selling fan work for profit =/= good fan.
In Japan, it’s a different story.
Doujin
literally means “same person”.
In context, it is amateur self-published
works.
This includes manga, novels, fan guides, art
collections, music and video games.
Of the revenue created from the “otaku”
industry, doujins made up 48% of sales.
48%! (Blu-Rays cost like $60/2 episodes,
figures around $100 in average for 1/8 size.)
Video
games creatist by hobbist circles for
fun: independent video game.
May use preexisting material/ original.
Notably:
Team Shanghai Alice (Touhou)
07 Expansion (Higurashi, Umineko)
Type-Moon (formerly dojin studio, Fate,
Tsukihime)
Doujinshi
are self published works of
magazines, manga and novels, etc.
This work is done by amateurs, but
sometimes professionals to avoid copyrights.
Groups of such people are considered doujin
circles (dojin sakuru).

Some
mangaka decide to draw doujinshi of
their own manga series
This promotes their own manga and expands
the universe, it is also a good way to include
questionable content not present in the
series.
Example 1: Combining two of their previous
works into a crossover.
These
mangaka were first doujin artists:
Huke (Black Rock Shooter)
Clamp (card captor sakura, chobits)
Worked
on the “Shining” series
Doujins
are often sold first at Comiket.
Comiket is Japan’s largest comic convention,
happening twice a year.
Doujins can then be sold second hand at a
higher price on the internet, auction, Anime
North, etc.
Based on image quality, hype, artist and
rarity, prices will vary.
You can make thousands by selling the right
doujins second hand (supply and demand).
Doujin
work involving preexisting series deals
with copyright infringement but due to such
a large success, this is often turned a blind
eye in the law.
“Borrowing work”
Because of this, artists can use this field to
avoid copyright laws, passing as “parody
work” or fan work (even if original.)
Doujins benefit the original, creating more
publicity and exposure.
