and where they are located.
How many muscles do you think
are in the body?
Muscular System Notes
• The body is composed of over 600 muscles
• Muscular System-group of structures that give your
body parts the power to move
•3 Kinds of Muscle:
•A.Skeletal-attached to bones that enable you to
move (voluntary)
•B.Smooth- the muscles found in the
organs, blood vessels, and glands
(involuntary)
•
•C.Cardiac- found only in the walls of the
heart (involuntary)
How muscles Work
• Two basic
actions
account for
all muscle
movement.
• Extension- the
lengthening of
muscle fibers
• Contraction- is
the shortening
of muscle fibers.
Fast and slow twitch muscle fibers
• Fast Twitch- Because
fast twitch fibers use
anaerobic metabolism
to create fuel, they are
much better at
generating short bursts
of strength or speed
than slow muscles.
However, they fatigue
more quickly.
• Slow Twitch- The slow
muscles are more
efficient at using oxygen
to generate more fuel
(known as ATP) for
continuous, extended
muscle contractions
over a long time
