Aim:
How is the human skeletal
system organized?
What are the functions of the
skeletal system?
1.
2.
3.
4.
provide shape & support
aid in movement
produce red blood cells
protect vital organs
• Skull – brain
• Ribs – heart and lungs
• Vertebrae – spinal cord
5. Store minerals (calcium & phosphorus)
What are the three parts of bone?
1. MEMBRANE
- repairs injuries, attaches to muscles
2. BONY LAYER
– bone cells. Minerals help keep them hard
3. MARROW
– soft tissue that produces blood cells
(Red Marrow)
- store fats (yellow marrow).
How are bones held together?
- by CONNECTIVE TISSUE
What are the types of connective
tissue?
1. CARTILAGE
– soft tissue between bones, acts as a cushion
- strong, flexible, & very slick
Ex: disks between vertebra
2. LIGAMENT
– tissue which connects 1 bone to another.
Ex: collateral ligaments in knee
3. TENDONS
– tissue which connects a muscle to a bone
Ex: Achille’s tendon in ankle
What is a joint?
-
The area where 2 bones meet.
What are the different types of
joints?
1. FUSED/FIXED/IMMOVABLE
– no movements, bones are
fused together
Ex: cranium, pelvis
What are the Different types
of Joints?
2. BALL AND SOCKET
-
Allows movement in all
directions
-
Ex. Hip, Shoulder.
What are the Different
types of Joints?
3. HINGE Joint
– one way movement back
and forth
Ex: knee, elbow
What are the Different
types of Joints?
4. PIVOT
- turn side to side ( rotation around a
point).
Ex: neck,
What are the Different
