Turn
table
A Turn table is used to play vinyl records. If a DJ was suppose to go
old school and use only turn table for mixing he would need two of
them. Its used for playing records and mixing music. There are lots of
great benefits with using like the moving platter makes you
understand how to move your hand to achieve certain scratching.
However the downsides to this is that when you do scratching the
record can get scratched and skipping might occur and if you want to
play new music it’ll be very hard to impossible to find because not
everyone still uses them. Audio Technica AT-LP60 is a brand of a vinyl
turntable.

CD
Turn
Table
CD Turn Tables are what most modern DJs use they usually have two
of them because for most that’s what they prefer. Its similar to a
regular turn table but when you look more closely you see it has a
lot more functions. First of all you don’t have vinyl so your tracks
wont skip. It has no moving platter and it also has functions like cue
point and loop. Another advantage is that with one CD you can burn
a lot of songs one there so that’s really good if you like most things
in one place. Pioneer CDJ-900NXS is a good one.

Laptop
• A laptop is so essential to a lot of DJs or all even. Its used to play MP3s and its
also used to store a lot of music. Like the Mac Book Pro some DJs store up to
10,000 songs on there or even more. A DJ mainly needs one laptop but some
might even go for two if they can handle it. Looking back, it's easy to see that
when everything went digital, the gradual advances in technology literally
changed the face of popular music, resulting in an explosion of remixes,
mashups, mixtapes, and entirely new musical styles like dubstep. There are
also a lot of virtual mixing you can do on them like Virtual DJ which makes
mixing a lot easier.

DJ Controller
• DJ digital controllers aim to copy the traditional turntable/CD
turntable set up. Most controllers come with shuttle jog dials that
mimic turntable control of an audio file, with slightly less accuracy.
• An advantage of controllers is that the processing power of the
computer can be used to manipulate the sound, giving a wide
range of effects and sampling options. Also, controllers are often
platform-independent, allowing for highly customized setups. A DJ
can choose and configure the software and use a variety of
controllers with it. Some DJs even use two or more controllers for
different applications during a set. Like using a well-known Pioneer
DDJ-SZ.

Using a Laptop with it
• Without a DJ controller there would be no use
for laptops. Because when using it basically is
an all-in-one system which also includes a
software like Traktor, Serato or Virtual DJ
which comes with it. So the laptop will contain
all the songs and the controller will have the
tools necessary for a great performance which
is also carried out on the computer.

Mixer
A Mixer is important if your going to use two turntables or two CD
players. It sits between two turntables or CD player or even one of
each. You’ll most likely will only need one unless for different
reasons you might need two, although I think that mainly applies if
you have multiple turntables. Its where all the sound comes in and
then it takes it to your amplifier. You use it to mix two songs with a
fader and a cross fader. Mixers come in a lot of different makes and
style. You have a scratch mixer and the way you can identify it is that
there are no button or knobs around the faders. For e.g. Pioneer
DJM-900SRT.

Monitors
Monitors are used to hear the music in the DJ booth. Two monitors
are very ideal for the average DJ. They are very unique they are used
to the music sound good better than it sounds on the recording. You
will want one that is accurate and clean so if there is anything wrong
with the track you can pick up on it. Monitors are similar there
aren't real any differences between the makes. But it depends on
you and what you want and also the style of music you play. You
also want to choose monitors based on the size of your studio
because that will affect it greatly. Pioneer S-DJ80X.

Headphones
Headphones are used to hear the music before it is played out.
Headphones are such an essential for DJs who like a lot of mixing or
any DJ in general. You use them to hear what you are going to play
before you actually do. What DJs do with their headphones is the
always leave and ear without the headphone on. The reason for this
is so that they can listen and mix what they're about to play while
hearing the music that are playing over the speakers. All in all when
having headphones or any other DJ equipment you pay for what you
get. So my thing would be to invest in some good quality headphones
like Dr Dre DJ Headphones Mixr.

Subwoofers/ Speakers
• Speakers are external machines. They are used so the crowd can
hear the music. They’re aren't that complicated most have a built in
amp and as long of you give it a power source and audio source. So
for most people who don’t like all the technical work with setting
up a speaker they should purchase one with most of the stuff built
in so all you have to do is plug it in and give it an audio source.

My Preferences
• I prefer a MacBook Pro laptop over a 3Com Ergo
Audrey because the gigabytes it holds is way more
than the 3Com. And it also has more features which
means it’s a lot better at DJ mixing. It also can
manage my songs better than the 3com and its also
more modern.
