An online journal where people can

Virus
A chunk of computer
programming code that makes
copies of itself without any
conscious human intervention. It
might also display messages, install
other software or files, delete
software or files.
Spyware
Software that is secretly installed on a users’
computer and that monitors use of the computer
without the users’ knowledge or consent.
Search engine
A tool designed to search for information on the
world wide web (Example: google.com)
Phishing
a form of Internet fraud (usually through a
fake email) that aims to steal valuable
information such as credit cards, social
security numbers, user IDs and passwords
Flaming
A hostile and insulting interaction between Internet
users
LAN
a local computer
network for
communication
between computers
AUP
(Acceptable Use Policy)
a written policy that a user must agree to follow
before they are allowed to use a product or service.
Greenwich Public Schools has one that each student
must follow in order to use the computers.
Wiki
A website that allows visitors to make changes,
contributions, or corrections

A popular standard for
linking computers into a
local area network
ISP
(Internet Service Provider)
a company that offers its
customers access to the Internet
Podcast
a Web-based audio broadcast via an RSS feed,
accessed by subscription over the Internet
Social Networking Site
the use of a website to connect with people who
share personal or professional interests.
Social bookmarking
The ability to save and categorize
a personal collection of
bookmarks and share them with
others.
Feed Reader
Also known as a news
aggregator, it allows news
content that is generated or
provided from another source
to be brought together and
displayed
Cache
A small fast memory holding recently accessed data,
designed to speed up subsequent access to the same
data.
Domain Name
a name owned by a person or organization and
consisting of an alphabetical or alphanumeric
sequence followed by a suffix indicating the toplevel domain
Firewall
a piece of hardware or software program
which protects a computer or network
from attacks from intruders and hackers.
Public Domain
Intellectual property that is not owned or
controlled by anyone. Not subject to copyright law.
Cookie
a message, or segment of data, containing
information about a user, sent by a Web server to a
browser and sent back to the server each time the
browser requests a Web page.
Database
systematically arranged collection of computer data,
structured so that it can be retrieved or manipulated
RSS Feed
A format that was developed by
Netscape in 1999 and became
very popular for bringing
together blogs and the news
sites.
World Wide Web
a system of interlinked hypertext
documents accessed via the Internet
Bookmark or Favorite
stored Web page locations
(URLs) that can be
retrieved.
Fair Use
allows limited use of copyrighted material without
requiring permission from the rights holders, such
as for commentary, criticism, news reporting or
education.
Copyright
governs the legally enforceable rights
of creative and artistic works under
the laws of the United States.
Spam
An inappropriate attempt to
use a mailing list as if it was a
broadcast medium by sending
the same message to a large
number of people who didn’t
ask for it.
Cyberbullying
The use of the internet, cell
phones, or other electronic
devices to carryout
deliberate, repeated and
hostile behavior
IP Address
Every computer that is on the internet has one.
It serves as a host and location identifier.
Netiquette
Online manners; the rules of
conduct for online or internet
user
PDF
(Portable Document Format)
An open file format created by Adobe that has
become a standard for sharing digital files on the
internet. Most downloadable online documents are
in this format.
URL
(Uniform Record Locator)
the address of a web page on the world
wide web.
Server
A host computer on a network that
holds information (such as Web
sites) and responds to requests for
information from it.
WAN
a network that covers an
area larger than a single
building
Router
A device in a network that
handles message transfers
between computers.
Trojan Horse
A program that appears as
something beneficial but actually
contains something harmful for
your computer. It can be disguised
as a “free” game.
wifi
a mechanism for wirelessly
connecting electronic devices.
Zip file
contains one or more files that have
been compressed, to reduce file
size.
