Midterm Exams
1)
We have a totally new epidermis every 25
to 45 days. Explain how this is possible by
describing what happens to the cells in
each layer of the skin. Be sure to include
the names of the layers in your answer.
1)
Correct order of layers
Stratum corneum (TOP)
Stratum lucidum
Stratum granulosum
Stratum spinosum
Stratum basale
Stratum basale cells constantly dividing/cell division
close to blood supply of dermis
Stratum corneum cells have protective keratin; layers
slough/DIE off – are pushed upwards
2)
You grab a chicken leg at a fast food joint.
Your health fanatic friend grabs the chicken
leg and declares, “This is all fat”. Use your
knowledge of tissues to defend your dinner
choice, giving at least three tissue
examples on the leg besides fat.
2)
Not ALL just fat = it is adipose tissue &
Meat
=
Skeletal muscle tissue
Bone
=
Osseous Tissue
Skin
= Stratified squamous
Tendon
= dense connective
3)
It was Nate’s first attempt at skydiving. He
fractured his right, lateral, lower arm bone,
bruised the distal end of the medial lower
leg, and scraped the distal end of his
phalanges. Name the bones and areas
that he broke.
3)
Right lateral lower arm bone = RADIUS
Distal end of medial lower leg = TIBIA
Distal end metacarpals
= bones in phalanges
4)
Using your knowledge of homeostasis,
explain what homeostasis is and discuss a
specific example of a negative feedback
mechanism in the human body. Be sure to
identify the key components of the
feedback mechanism.
4)
Homeostasis is the body’s ability to maintain a
relatively stable internal environment.
Body temperature: warm air is the stimulus
Receptors in skin sense warm air
Input (nerve impulses) sent to control center
which is the brain
Output leaves brain and is sent to effectors which
are sudoriferous glands
Sweat evaporates, cools off body, return to
homeostasis
5)
Adam was trying to impress Jenna with a
tale about his football injury. “The coach
said I suffered an injury to the dorsal
antecubital in my groin.” Jenna responded,
“I think either you or your coach suffered a
cephalic injury.” Why wasn’t Jenna
impressed with Adam? Be sure to
explain/define all underlined terms.
5)
DORSAL (back)
ANTECUBITAL (anterior / front of elbow
Groin ( = inguinal region where body
trunk meets thigh - other side of body)
CEPHALIC = head region
