Introduction
 Weight depends on bones, muscles, fat,
fluids, and tissues
 Food energy is mostly stored in fat
Measuring Body Fatness
 “body fatness” is NOT the same as “body
weight”
 Body fat can be measured by using a
fatfold caliper
 Done by:
 Pinching below shoulder blade, back of arm,
side of waist
 Measuring how much skin is in pinch
 What are quick ways to measure body
fatness?
 How does “body fat” differ from “body weight”
Scale Weight
 High weight doesn’t always mean high fat
 Muscle weighs more than fat
 A person with very little fat, but high
muscle content weighs MORE than a
person with just high fat content.
 Height-weight tables are useless because
they list facts of adults over the age of 25.
