ACTIVITY: Our Sequenced Story
CURRICULUM AREA:
Language/Literacy
BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVE(S): The
children will use a toy person to tell a
collective story.
CONCEPTS:
 1. A story has a beginning, a middle
and an end.
 2. Stories have characters, pictures,
and words.
TARGET GROUP/GROUP SIZE: 5’s &
6’s/ group of 6-8 (or about half the
class)
LOCATION: group time area, circle
time area gathering place
MATERIALS: sequenced story such as
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, wooden
play person or rag doll.

PROCEDURE: (including questions/comments to stimulate
discussion, and guidance suggestions/limits)
Warm Up: Gather children and read a sequenced story
such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Ask the children
what the story is about. Then talk with them about the
different parts of the story, including the characters, the
pictures, and words. Point out that the story has a
beginning, a middle and an end.
Activity: Bring out the wooden person or rag doll, and
explain to then children that they will be passing the toy
around the circle to tell a sequenced group story.
Ask the children to brainstorm a name for their story’s
character. Then give the toy to a child nearest you and
ask him or her to begin the story (for example, “Amy is
going to school.” Then ask the child to pass the toy on to
the next child for the next idea.
