 Identify four most common running injuries
 How to self manage injuries
 Give general advise about management of
lower back pain
 Prevention of injuries
3
Four Most Common Injuries
 Runners Knee
 Shin Splints
 Plantar fascitis
 Achilles tendinopathy
4
INTERESTING FACTS
 Cramps
 Muscle strain
 Ligament sprain
 Fracture
5
KNEE
 Most common injured joint
 2 joints- patellafemoral joint and tibiofemoral
joint
 4 ligaments
6
SPECIAL QUESTIONS
Sound at time of injury- POP or SNAP
Swelling- immediate or later
Giving way
Locking/ catching
Night pain
7
RUNNERS KNEE
 Patella femoral pain
 Occurs when patella fails to move smoothly
and centrally through femoral groove
 Often due to muscle imbalance
8
SIGNS
 Ache in knee cap with sudden stabbing pain
 Aggravated by stairs, running
 Eased with rest
 More common with people whose jobs
involve sitting
9
TREATMENT






ICE
NSAIDS
REST
REDUCE AGGRAVATING FACTORS
SWIMMING
PHYSIOTHERAPY- Stretching and
Strengthening Quads, stretching
hamstrings/calfs
10
ILIOTIBIAL BAND SYNDROME
 Lateral knee pain
 Worse going downhill or down stairs
 Starts with twinge and gets worse
11
TREATMENT
 PRICE
 SWIM/ CYCLE
 PHYSIOTHERAPIST- to stretch ITB, soft tissue
work to help stretch fibers, strengthening VMO,
Often notice leg length difference
 ORTHOTICS- Trainers
12
SHIN SPLINTS
 Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
 Pain inside of shin during exercise and at
rest
13
TREATMENT
 PRICE
 Change running shoes
 Often excessive pronation ( flat feet)
Require arch supporting inner soles
 Pool running
 Avoid downhill running
 Physiotherapy- Deep tissue massage, calf
and shin stretches
14
PLANTARFASCITIS
 Inflammation of the fascia that runs along
the length of the sole of the foot
 Pain- heel, inside of sole of the foot
 Pain- with activity
 Worse AM
15
PLANTARFASCITIS

16
TREATMENT
 Ice- Frozen Water bottle, roll along bottom of foot
 NSAIDS
 Physiotherapy- stretching the fascia, along with
gastrocnemius and soleus
 Taping
17
ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY
 Pain achilles tendon (specific)
 AM stiffness
 Stiff with inactivity
 Occurs most commonly when runners have
quickly increased distance
18
ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY
19
TREATMENT
 3-4 days rest
 Ibuprofen as least damage with the tendon
repair
 Physiotherapy- Eccentric strengthening
Pain free when performing loading exercises
