Exponential growth




When a population (or your bank account)
increases by a fixed percentage each year, it
is aid to undergo exponential growth.
For example, $1000 to a baby at birth:
At 2% annual compound interest would give
him/her $1428.25 at age 18
At 5% it would produce $2406.62

"The power of population is indefinitely greater
than the power in the earth to produce
subsistence for man". Malthus saw this situation
as divinely imposed to teach virtuous behavior.
Believing that one could not change human
nature, and that egalitarian societies were prone
to over-population, Malthus wrote in dramatic
terms: "epidemics, pestilence and plague advance
in terrific array, and sweep off their thousands
and ten thousands. Should success be still
incomplete, gigantic famine stalks in the rear,
and with one mighty blow, levels the population
with the food of the world".[

Populations of all organisms increase
exponentially unless they meet restraints.
No species can maintain exponential growth
indefinitely but may grow exponentially for a
time.
Exponential growth usually starts with small
populations & ideal environments.

Maximum population size that a given
environment can sustain
200 years ago the human population was 1
billion now it is over 6.7 billion
Can we keep raising the carrying capacity of
the earth?

In 1981, two panthers were captured and radio-collared, initiating an
extensive monitoring program that continues today (over 116 panthers
have been collared since the program’s inception) [5]. By 1990, all
extensive panther habitats had been explored and few panthers
remained uncollared [5]. Between 1981 and 1990, the panther
population was static at 30-50 adults [5] but began to show signs of
inbreeding depression in the heart and sperm [4]. To increase genetic
diversity, eight reproductive females from a closely related subspecies
were translocated from Texas in 1995. The Texas females have
produced at least 20 offspring [2] and the hybrid kittens don’t appear to
have the heart and reproductive problems seen in the Florida panthers
[5]. The population has increased by over 200% between 1995 and 2003
[3]. In 2003, there were 87 known panthers [4]. In addition, the panthers
roam over a larger area, including areas in the Everglades, Big Cypress
and Fakahatchee once suggested to be unable to support them [4].
American alligator
Alligator mississippiensis
Habitat loss and poorly regulated hunting resulted in the decline of
American alligator populations. Since listing, populations have increased and the
species has been down-listed or delisted throughout much of its range
TALLAHASSEE – In Florida, 266 sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
are reported every day,
11 cases every hour and one case every 5.42 minutes, according to
2008 data. Approximately 66 percent (64,129) of the cases occurred
among individuals between the ages of 15-24.
The Florida Department of Health (DOH) reminds Floridians that
these STDs if untreated may cause long-term health affects including
infertility, low birth weight, pelvic inflammatory disease,
neurological damage, and the spread of infection to others. Viral
STDs like herpes simplex virus, which have no cure, cause a life long
impact on physical, psychological and emotional health. According
to CDC, STDs cost the United States health care system as much as
$15.5 billion annually. Most STDs are easily diagnosed and treated,
but they often have no symptoms and go undetected. When not
treated, they often result in significant costs to our health care
system.
STDs include human papillomavirus (HPV), chlamydia,
gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, syphilis and HIV. These
diseases continue to be the most commonly reported
infectious diseases in the nation. Approximately 19
million new sexually transmitted infections occur every
year in the United States, and almost half of these are
among young people aged 15 to 24. For 2008,
Florida provisionally reported nearly 97,000 cases of
sexually transmitted infections.
Additionally, during 2008, roughly 10,800 maternal
records were created where the mother wasidentified as
infected with syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia. For the
same period, 43 infants younger than one year were
diagnosed with an STD.
