Background
• The Nursing and Nursing Faculty
shortage
• Increased need for clinical
placements
• May be called a “Clinical
Scholar” or “Clinical Nurse
Leader” in other areas but same
concept
• Term “embedded” comes from
Operation Iraqi Freedom war in
2001
Role of Embedded Faculty
• Coordinate, supervise, and
evaluate the clinical education of
nursing students in collaboration
with school of nursing faculty
• Facilitate student’s acquisition of
clinical competencies, the
development of critical thinking
skills and professional role
modeling
• Embedded faculty have a
working knowledge of the facility
and are therefore very familiar
with the patients and the nursing
practice
Role of Embedded Faculty
• Embedded faculty assigned part
of their hours to patient care and
promoting evidence-based
nursing practice and the other
time is spent working with
students in the clinical setting or
classroom
• Faculty work with staff to assess
needs and identify clinical
practice problems
• Embedded faculty work with
students on identified evidencebased projects and innovative
practices which lead to process
improvements and better patient
outcomes
