Introduction
Africa has received the most attention of AIDS which is also spreading swiftly in other parts of the world. Russia and Ukraine had the fastestgrowing epidemics 2002, and many experts believe China and India will suffer the next tidal wave of infection. The purpose of this study was
to compare HIV/AIDS-related research performances in India and China during 1991 to 2004. The database was compiled from Science
Citation Index (SCI) and compared by the publication output, collaboration level, and author keywords.
Methods
Documents used in this study were based on the databases of the SCI which was accessed from the ISI Web of Science, Philadelphia, PA,
USA. Selected documents included HIV or AIDS as a part of its title, abstract, or keyword.

Conclusions
The yearly publications have increased from 1991 to 2004 for India and China.
The overall performance of China’s HIV/AIDS research indicated that India has higher productivity before 2002.
The US was the most frequent partner for both India and China with 69 and 92 collaborative articles, respectively.
The most productive corresponding institutes in each country were Tsinghua University at China and India Institute of Medical Sciences at
India.
