Canine brucellosis
Definition
It is an infectious diseases of dog caused by B. canis,
characterized by abortion and epididymitis
Etiology
B. canis is gram negative coccobacilli
Dog also susceptible to infection with B. abortus
Epidemiology
Distribution
Animal susceptible
The disease present in certain locality and present in Egypt
Dogs of all ages and sex
Mode of transmission
Source of infection: vaginal discharge, aborted fetus and urine of
infected or carrier animals
Mode of transmission:
Contact through oronasal (ingestion or inhalation)
Penetration of conjunctiva of genital mm
Venereal or AI through infected semen
Pathogenesis
Following infection
bacteremia
Localized in
Lymphoid tissues within macrophages
Transport to genital organs
Orchitis, epididymitis and
abortion
infertility
Clinical signs
Fever, lethargy and poor reproductive performance
In male:
Scrotal swelling due to epididymitis and infertility
In female:
Early embryonic death
Late gestation abortion at 45-59 days
Persistent brown to greenish vaginal discharges for 6 w after
abortion
Early fetal resorption
Diagnosis
Field diagnosis
The clinicians suspect the disease from clinical signs of
abortion, epididymitis and epidemiology of the disease
Laboratory diagnosis
Samples
Placenta, vaginal discharge, aborted fetus, blood and serum
Laboratory procedures
Direct microscopic examination with gram stain
Isolation on specific media
Serological test:
It
gives negative results within 4 w after abortion or infection
False
positive result due to cross reaction with other bacteria
Treatment
It is expensive and usually unsuccessful in late stage
Antibiotic as dihydrostreptomycin 10 mg/kg every 12h for 1
w alone or with doxycycline 5-10 mg/kg orally every 12 h
Control
Isolation of infected animals
Hygienic disposal of aborted fetuses and fetal placenta
Testing all breeding stock before entry in breeding
Cleaning and disinfection all infected premises and equipment
