Lesteriosis in
animal
By
Mariam Magdy Abdel Motaleb
Salma N. el yamany
defination
*Is an infection but not
contagious disease.
* (life_threating disease)
*it is called circling disease .
*Also winter_spring disease of
feedlot or haused ruminant.

Listeria monocytogenes bacteria
1/ it is a gram positive
2/extremely antibiotic resistant coccoid to bacillus
shaped bacteria found in environment
3/ live in soil ,in poorly made silage & spoiled
forages & DI tract & mammary GI
4/found in feces of infected birds , wild mammals
fish ,insects& fetal feces
( meconium)
5/shedded in nasal discharge, uterine discharge,
aborted fetus

Listeriosis is most
prevalent during spring &
winter months , w`
suggests prevalance of l.
monocytogenes thus
management practice can
be applied to minimize the
risk of infection
Pm lecture

*Common in domestic animal
( domestic mammals & poultry)
espacially adult ruminant w` are
feed contaminated silage than
human beings
*Newly born , elder ages &
pregnant.

1)through ingestion of contaminated feed or water 
or by fecal shedding of bacteria
(( oral _fecal route ))
2) through inhalation
N.B
**Infected animal could die if improperly treated
**Zoonosis cosumption of contaminated
unpasteurised milk by human can lead to
meningitis & meningoencephalitis
if pregnant , abortion

Listeriosis can be presented in
3 forms
Abortion
septicemia
Encephalitis

Abortion Form
NOTE
PATHOGENESIS
* Abortion up to 12 days later
e` purulent exudate covering
placenta.
* In ewes & does & cows
occuring last third of
pregnancy.
Septicemia
Form
Encephalitis
Form
* In monogasteric An` &
young Ru` ( 1 to 3 years old )
>> listeriosis presents
differently causing
( septicemia) w` can also be
fatal.
*Ch`ch` by encephalitis or
meningoencephalitis
(inflammation of brain)
& highest mortality rate
*Death can follow clinical signs
acutely is within 24- 48 hrs.
1) If >. The uterine infection
Bacteria
occurs early during this period mouth
fetus dies quickly as result of
multply
septicemia & get autolysed&
expelled.
The placenta is retained as
result of
mild metritis.
2) If> the fetus is near term
when infection develops
dystocia is the rule e` severe
metritis & msepticemia in dam.

Septicemia
Form
1) Abortion
or
2) stillbirth.
1) Diarrhea.
2) Abortion.
3) Death.
1) Early clinical signs are
depression , decreased appetite.
2) decreased milk production.
3) Fever.
4) Neuromuscular incoordination
w` An` circle in same direction.
5) Facial nerve paralysis (on one
side).
6) Ear drooping , salivation.
7) Lack jaw , imparied swelling .
8) Death.
1) In fetuses
necrotic
foci in the liver & spleen .
2) In placenta
necrosis
of placental villi & become
covered by purulent exudates
1) Small focal necrotic
lesion found in liver & all
organs ( milliary
abscesses).
2) in very young an`
gastroenteritis may be
1) The meninges are thickened by
greenish edema.
2) Grayish foci of softening may
be found in the cross section of
medulla.

Encephalitis Form
1) Micro abscesses in brain.
2) Vasculitis in white matter.
3) Perivascular cuffing.
4) Meningitis.
