Objectives
1. The students will compare the three
major Christian orders during the
Middle Ages, Dominican, Franciscan,
and Cistercian, using a three-ring Venn
diagram and a 20 words or less writing
activity.
2. The students will analyze the features of
early, gothic, and Romanesque
architecture, and categorize pictures
based on their features as one of the
three using a teacher-created chart.

• The Roman
Catholic church is
led by the pope,
cardinals, bishops,
priests and nuns
• A religious order is
a large group of
priests who believe
the same things

Monks and Monasteries
• MONKS- Male religious
leaders who gives his life
to prayer and good
works. They usually live
in MONASTERIES

which helped Europeans
grow more crops

• FRANCISICAN
Monks taught
Christianity to the
people, and helped
the poor and served
as missionaries.
DOMINICAN Monks
defended church
teachings, and
preached to welleducated people

• The first two
UNIVERSITIES were the
University of Bologna,
Italy and the Sorbonne in
Paris, France and mostly
educated priests.
• In universities in the
Middle Ages students
studied grammar, logic,
math, geometry, music
and astronomy.
