 Over 2,000 years humans have been
practicing religion. Why do you believe
religion plays such an important role in
society and why do people die for it?

 How did the Church play a vital role in
medieval life?

about women influenced people’s daily

 Through sacraments and rituals,
moral guidance, and service to the
sick and needy, the Church
dominated daily life. Churchmen
gave moral guidance to rulers,
served in governments and forced
rulers to obey them.

Church Dominates
 During the early Middle Ages
the Church’s most important
achievement was converting
people of Western Europe to
Christianity
 But by the late Middle Ages,
Western Europe became a
Christian civilization. Anyone
who was not part of the church
was suspicious.
Parish Priest
 -The priest of the parish was often




the only contact people had with
the Church.
-Celebrated mass and
administered the sacraments, the
sacred rites of the Church.
-Christians believed participation
in the sacraments would lead them
to salvation or the everlasting life
with God.
-Priests explained the teaching of
the Church, and the Bible, which
was in Latin only.
- Priests also offered guidance to
people on moral issues, assisted
the sick and needy and even ran
schools.
Village Church/Cathedrals
 -Church was the social center and a place of worship.
 -Daily life revolved around the Christian calendar.
 -Villages took pride in the churches appearance, often decorating them.
Some churches housed relics, which were the possession and remains of
saints.
 -Many people made pilgrimages to pray before the relics.
 -Church required people to pay a tithe or tax equal to tenth of their
income.
 -Bishops, who supervised parish priests, managed cathedrals.
 -Cathedrals were often built in Gothic style. Members of the church
contributed money, labor and skills to build cathedrals.
Women
 -Church doctrine taught that men and women
were equal in the eyes of God.
 -On earth, women were seen as weak and easily
led to sin. That is why men had to guide women.
 -Mary was seen as the ideal women. Churches
were dedicated to the “mother of God”, “queen of
heaven”.
 -Church had a minimum age for marriage.
Churches can fine men who injured their wives.
 -Churches often punished women more harshly
than men.
 -The church frowned upon women learning and
preferred to accept the churches authority.
Monastic Life
 Some men and women
withdrew from life to
become monks and
nuns
 They devoted their
entire lives to spiritual
goals
Benedictine Rule
 About 530 a monk named Benedict
organized a monastery of Monte
Cassino in Central Italy
 He created life rules for monks and
nuns called the Benedictine Rule.
Monks and nuns took 3 vows
1) Obedience to the abbot or abbess (head of
the monastery)
2) Poverty
3) Chasity (purity)
Monks and nuns divided their day between worship,
work and study
Service and Scholarship
 Monasteries provided basic health and educational
services
 Monks and nuns looked after the poor and sick and set
up schools for children. They also gave food to
travelers
 The monasteries created libraries that contained
Greek and Roman works
 Educated monks wrote and taught Latin which was
the language of the church and educated people.
Opportunities for Women
 Although, women could not
become priests many did enter
convents to pursue singing and
education.
 However, the church withdrew
these rights later on and
frowned upon women learning.

 pope claimed papal supremacy giving pope authority over
kings, emperors and secular rulers.

 Economic = land holdings and estates
 Political = own armies, educated church officials
served in the courts

Church’s spiritual power



Breaking the church’s moral laws, or canon law, could
lead to excommunication or unable to receive the
sacraments.
No sacraments = if you die you will go to hell.
Rulers feared the interdict = everyone under the king is
also excommunicated

Problems With Church





Discipline weakened, corruption set in
Monks and nuns began to ignore their vows of
poverty
Priests focused more on family than religious
duties (at time could be married)
Some clergy lived in luxury
Church ruled the courts bc educated were also
church officials.
