Brief History of the Physician Profession
A. Pre 1900’s
•
Doctors lacked the basic science to properly diagnose
and treat illness.
•
It was believed that illness was caused by the
misdistribution of ‘humors’ in the body and the
congestion of various organs.
•
Treatment included any or all ways to remove excessive
fluid…bleed, suck out lymph, induce vomiting, etc.

B. Early 1900’s
• Doctors recognized their skills in diagnosis and
prognosis, but inability to provide effective
treatment
• Subsequently, Therapeutic Nihilism’ -therapy by
nothing- became prevalent.
• Doctors were expected to provide information
and support.
Current Hippocratic Oath: "I will apply for the benefit of the
sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin
traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism."

D. 1945-present
• Technology and drugs have improved diagnosis
and treatment options.
• Alternative therapies are increasing in
popularity.
• While effective, treatment options are complex
and expensive.
• Insurance companies and the pharmaceutical
industry have taken center stage, controlling
much of the industry, and potentially interfering
with the fundamentals of therapy.
