• LARGE MOTOR SKILLS: balls, jump
rope, hula hoop, tricycle

on yarn, play dough creations,
stencils
Mo’ Skills
• SOCIAL SKILLS: games such as Cooties,
Go Fish, Candy Land and learning sex-role
identification. Teaches them to share,
take turns, and compromise.
• SPEECH DEVELOPMENT: books, music,
story boards, rhymes
• Can be encouraged by talking with your
child a lot!

MATH: puzzles, sorting items like
blocks by color can build intellectual
skills
Types of Play:
•
SOLITARY PLAY: Child playing alone.
No interest in anyone else or what
they are doing. The toys he/she plays
with are different from those the
other children are playing with.
(INFANTS)
•
PARALLEL PLAY: Child is playing
beside other children rather than with
them. (2-3 YEARS)
More play
• ASSOCIATIVE PLAY: A child playing with other
children. The children share toys and interact
with one another. Children are involved in similar
but not identical activity. Child does what they
wish but is a part of a large group. (3 YEAR –
SCHOOL AGE)
• COOPERATIVE PLAY: This type of play involves
organization. The child is a part of a group that
has a specific purpose in mind (such as playing a
game.) There are usually leaders and followers.
Types of Development:
• 1. Sequential Development - Growth and
development occur in a series of patterns
called sequential steps. They act like a
staircase. Each step is based on existing
skills and capabilities which were learned
in prior steps.
• EX: For a baby to shake a rattle, he must
first know how to grasp it.
Individual Development
Rates
• Describes the varying rates
that children develop. Rates
vary from child to child
because each child is unique.
• Factors such as heredity,
environment, and motivation
influence individual rates of
growth.
Interrelated
Development Rates
• Growth is also influenced by interrelated
development rates. Physical, Social, Emotional,
and Intellectual growth are all happening at
the same time.
• EX: You are babysitting an infant who is
crying so you console him with a rattle. He
recognizes the rattle (intellectual) and his
hand grasps the rattle (physical). The baby is
appeased (emotional)by the distracted of the
rattle.
