Academy Celebrates Legislative Success!
• The Academy’s Medical Imaging Research Initiative
(MIRI) led to the creation of the Interagency Working
Group on Medical Imaging (IWGMI).
• In support of the IWGMI, the Academy worked with
our Congressional partners on Committee report
language that calls for the White House Office of
Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to provide an
update on the Working Group.
Academy Urges Senate to Pass 21st Century
Cures to Drive NIH Funding
• The House version of the 21st Century Cures
legislation provides $8.75 billion in funding
for the NIH over a five-year period.
• In spite of bipartisan agreement in support
of medical innovation and research, this
legislation has yet to pass the Senate.
• The Academy will continue to advocate in
support of 21st Century Cures.

Cancer Moonshot
Academy of Radiology Research Policy Statement on the Cancer Moonshot
Where We Stand: Academy Moonshot Policy
The Policy Statement succinctly addresses the following major components of the contributions imaging researchers can make to this endeavor:
1.The role of imaging in cancer research and treatment.
2.Computational science and big data.
3.Improving research and outcomes by supporting educational pathways for young researchers.
4. The role of the Interagency Working Group on Medical Imaging (IWGMI) to advance cancer research.
5. Imaging research as a support for FDA efforts to create novel products.

The Academy Gains Traction: Next Step Meeting with OSTP
The Academy and CIBR leadership are meeting with the leaders of the Cancer Moonshot
initiative to help inform and facilitate the Administration’s efforts, including the role of imaging in
cancer early detection, precision diagnosis, and minimally-invasive treatment.

Academy Academic Council Sponsors Early Career Investigators to Attend
Annual Showcase in DC
The Academy Council of Early Career Investigators in Imaging, CIBR and Academy leadership, with Roderic I. Pettigrew PhD, MD, Director of the NIBIB.
Travel awardees are also inducted into the Council of Early Career Investigators in Imaging.
Partnership with ARVO:
Communicating Patent Impact
• The Academy’s Nature article: Patents as Proxies: NIH Hubs
of Innovation, shows that National Eye Institute patents
were most likely to go on and be commercialized. ARVO is
using this article for its current project on optical coherence
tomography (OCT).
• This is a great example of the Academy’s “ripple effect” on
the community!
Academy Hosts Successful “Venture Imaging Pilot”
During the AUR Annual Meeting
• The Academy hosted a pilot program to educate early career investigators
about how best to present translational research and technology development
ideas to industry and other non-governmental funding sources.
• This initiative will host two meetings annually, one in the spring for educational
purposes and the second in the fall as a “shark tank” event that will lead to
potential funding.
