H2 on the ROAD to Success…..
If Ashley had 3 cats and each one had 4
legs, how could we find how many
legs all the cats had?
Ms. Massara thinks “MMM… How
would I solve this? Well I know that
there are 3 cats AND each cat has 4
legs…..
SO I CAN ADD!!
=4 legs
=4 legs
+ =4 legs
=12 legs
BUT WAIT!
THERE IS AN EASIER WAY!!
YOU CAN …..
Multiplication is a fast way to
add equal numbers.
Since all 3 cats have 4 legs,
instead of adding them
together, we could
MULTIPLY.
4 legs
X 3 cats
12 legs
YAHOO!!
MULTIPLICATION IS A
SHORT CUT!!
How many legs altogether would
the 3 boys have?
Ms. Massara thinks “Mmm… well I
know that there are 3 boys. Each
boy has 2 legs…
SO I CAN ADD!!
2 legs
+
2 legs
+
2 legs
--------6 legs

If a crayon box holds 7 crayons,
how many crayons would 2 boxes
hold?
Can you think of a multiplication
problem that shows this?
7 crayons
X 2 boxes
14 crayons
If every teacher has 3 books and
there are 5 teachers, how many
books do they all have?
Can you think of a multiplication
problem that shows this?
5 teachers
X 3 books
15 books
If every desk has 1 apple and there
are 9 desks, how many apples are
there in all?
Can you think of a multiplication
problem that shows this?
1 apple
X 9 desks
9 apples
Multiplication involves sets of
objects. Can you write a
multiplcation problem for
these sets?
I think I
can do it!
5 sets of 2 each
5 X 2 =10
3 sets of 4 each
3 X 4 = 12
3 sets of 3 each
3X3=9
4 sets of 2 each
4X2=8
6 sets of 3 each
3 X 6 = 18
5 sets of 4 each
5 X 4 = 20
