Scientists classify animals
• They are grouped to make it easier for
scientists to study them.
• There are two main groups of animals:
– Those with a backbone inside their bodies.
• Vertebrates
– Those with a backbone outside their bodies.
• Invertebrates
• Which group do you belong to?
Shared Characteristics
• Organisms in the same group have similar
characteristics
• We are going to focus on insects.
• All insects have a few similar characteristics.
• They have an exoskeleton. Here is a picture of a
cicada’s exoskeleton.
• They have three main parts to their bodies: a head, a
thorax, and an abdomen.
• They have one pair of antennae on top of their
heads.They have two pair of wings.
• They have three pair of legs.

• Their wings are
symmetrical.
Three pair of legs
• To be an classified
as an insect, an
organism must have
THREE pair of legs.
• These legs are
symmetrical.
Other characteristics
• Usually, they are small
in size.
• Insects, like all animals,
move.
– They jump, fly, or walk.
• They cannot produce
their own food by
means of
photosynthesis, but are
consumers.
• They also need water
and air to live.
