In my Spaghetti!
Introduction
Nutrition Education doesn’t have to be boring!
Students can’t resist a little fun and magic with their food! There’s
no magician’s hat to be found in the cafeteria… just some
“hare” in my spaghetti!
Remember…
Hungry kids can’t learn!
Therefore…
The primary goal of nutrition education is to influence student’s
eating behaviors.
Students…
they are ready to learn and achieve academic
But we need to give them
the proper fuel!
 Filler up with high
octane nutrition
education!

 Utilizing the New USDA Food Guide Pyramid and the American
Dietary Guidelines with your newly acquired magic skills!
Sample Lesson Plan

Start with the Food Pyramid
 Show all Food Groups
 Describe each food group’s function
 Incorporate magic
 Reality Zone! Share both inspirational and tragic stories which
illustrate how good and bad choices affected people’s lives.

Food Pyramid Magic
 Grains; Eat
at least 6 oz per day. Breads, pastas, whole
grain cereals and rice.

Vegetables/Fruits; Eat 4-5 cups per day. Eat orange colored
and dark green leafy vegetables i.e. broccoli, sweet potato,
carrots, spinach served fresh or frozen.

 Milk; 3
cups a day is recommended. Go low fat or fatfree. Choose yogurt and other milk products.

 Meats &
Beans; Eat 5 ½ oz every day. Go lean. Choose
low fat meats and poultry. Grill, bake or broil. Choose
more fish and legumes.

Things you will need:

“Spongeee” fruits/vegetables
Melting and Breaking a Metal Spoon or Fork with
two fingers!
You will need:

Two identical metal spoons
 Two identical metal forks
Magical Grains!
Cut and restore the spaghetti noodle!
You will need:
 3 ft. rope (10 pcs.)
 Large serving tray
 Scissors
 Red construction/poster paper
 A stuffed bunny (optional)

“Professor’s Nightmare”
Magically produce 3 different sizes of spaghetti into 3 same size
spaghetti!
You will need the following:
 3 pieces of rope of different size
Magical Fruit/Vegetables
Making a fruit salad, you will need:
 CD music “Fruit Salad, yummy yummy” from the Wiggles music
kid’s group
 Balloons (260 size)
 Balloon pump
 Large Brown paper package
Making a balloon apple/orange/banana
You will need:
 1 – 260 partially inflated red balloon
 1 – 260 size partially inflated yellow balloon
 1 – 260 size partially inflated orange balloon
 Balloon pump

 Thumb tip
 Small silk streamer
 Plate

The un-withering lettuce:
 Fresh Romaine lettuce leaf
Levitating milk!
Making a Milk Carton levitate:
 ½ pint empty milk carton
 Scissors
Magical Meat/Beans!
Make Beans or Meat magically appear:
 Brown paper bag or magic change bag
 Dried Kidney beans
 Toy plastic chicken/meats
 Construction paper
 Scissors
 Scotch Tape
Putting all the “magic” together!





Make the Wellness Policy work!
In the cafeteria; tours, vegetable/herbal gardens, making healthy
snacks.
In the classroom; utilize the USDA Food Pyramid.
Teachers/Parents/Community; offer nutrition education and gather
support!
Nutrition materials; know where to get them!
It is not THE END…
