Number of Matches
• Before starting a tournament it is important to know
how many matches will be necessary
• Formula for single elimination is M = N – 1
– M = # of matches
– N = # of teams
Example Elimination Tournament with 8 Teams
Matches= 8-1
Matches=7
• Blocks of a tournament are constructed in perfect
powers of 2 ( 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64)
Seeding
• ranking a team or entry according to their ability
• it is suggested to place seeds as follows
The best competitor is placed at the top of the bracket
The 2nd seed is placed at the bottom of the bottom bracket
The 3rd seed is placed at the top of the lower half of the bracket
The 4th seed is placed at the bottom of the top half of the bracket
• “top of the top, bottom of the bottom, top of the bottom, bottom of
the top”
Construct and seed a bracket for 8 teams
-The Numbers indicate ranking for each team
-The Letters indicate the order the games will
be played
Byes
• byes are used to fill vacant slots in the bracket when the number of
participants is not a perfect power of 2.
• Formula to determine the # of byes is
B = S – N (B= byes, S= Slots, N = # of teams)
Example in a 11 team tournament:
Byes= Slots - Number of teams
Byes= 14- 11
Byes= 3
Practice:
•When placing byes you will follow the same procedure as seeding
– top of the top, bottom of the bottom, etc, etc.
•Construct and seed a tournament using byes for 6 teams
-Numbers indicate ranking of each team
-Numbers with brackets indicate the order that
games will be played
Byes in a six team single elimination
tournament:
Byes = Slots - Number of teams
Byes = 8 - 6
Byes = 2
