• When evaluating expressions…
– Plug in the value for each variable and rewrite the
expression
– Follow order of operations to solve
• Evaluate each expression if r = -5, s = 2, t = 7,
and u = 1
1.) 5r – 4
3.)
(𝟑+𝒖)²
𝟖
2.) 4r – 10s
4.) rst

• Distributive Property
– Multiply the number on the outside by both terms
inside the parentheses
– Answer should be 1 number if only numbers are
involved
• Ex: 7(3 + 12)
– If you have variable term and number term, DO
NOT put them together
• Ex: 11(x + 5) = 11x + 55
• Exs:
1.) -9(4 – x – 4y)
2.) 4(4x – 5y + 3)
• You and 4 friends are going to see a movie.
You each want your own popcorn and a drink.
The tickets cost x dollars, the popcorn is $4.50,
and the drinks are $2.75. Write an expression
using the Distributive Property to find the
total cost of going to the movie and simplify.
