Revised 03/04/09
You need a street address
to find a house or business.
Each house or business
has it’s own special address.
Each library item has its own
special address (call number).
The library is like
your grocery store.
Grocery Store items are
grouped by type.
Bakery
Dairy
Non-Fiction grouped by subject.
We use the Dewey Decimal
System to group items by
subject in the Library.
Most public libraries and
some college libraries use
the Dewey Decimal system.
There are 10 main groups.

v. 9
Dewey Decimal System number of 3 digits
Decimal point followed by more digits
Part of the Author’s Last Name or the Title
Year of publication
Volume, part or copy number.
To read a RTC Library call number:
428
.24
CRUMB

v. 9
• Read the first line of the Dewey number as a
3-digit whole number. Sort numerically.
• Read the second line of the Dewey number
as a decimal number. Sort numerically.
• If two items have the same Dewey number,
items are then arranged alphabetically by the
next line (the author or title line).
• If the items have the same Dewey and the
same author/title line, then file numerically by
the date on the next line.
• If that is all still the same, then file numerically
by the volume, part or copy number on the
last line.

in the correct collection.
• Media Materials: videos, DVDs, audiocassettes, CD-ROMs, etc.
• Reference Books: we refer to them a lot so they don’t check out of the Library
• Non-Fiction Books: books with factual information (shelved in “Book Stacks”)
• Fiction Books: books of imaginary or make-believe stories
• Periodicals: magazines, journals and newspapers
Can’t find what you need?
Ask the librarians for help!
