To translate word phrases into algebraic
expressions.
Why? To master another aspect of Algebra and
Functions in 6th grade math (and beyond).
Being able to write expressions is a key
component in Algebra and other higher math
when solving any kind of word problem.
AF 1.2: Evaluate an algebraic expression for a given
situation, using up to three variables.
AF 1.3: Apply algebraic order of operations and the
commutative, associative, … properties to
evaluate expressions…
MR 3.0: Move beyond a particular problem by
generalizing to other situations.
Chart of terms for the 4 operations.

A)
1) Read the statement and
understand what you are
being asked to do.
2) Look for the key words to
translate into operations
(+, -, x, ÷).
3) Look for “is” to translate
to =.
4) Parentheses are used to
arrange in a certain order.
5) Write out your expression
or equation and check
your work.
B) 37 increased by 5
= 37 + 5
C) 10 times a number
= 10 x n or 10n or 10‧n
D) 2 less than a number

E) A quantity more than 10
= 10 + x
Write each phrase as an

4) Alex raked 5 bags. Adam
raked an x amount. How
