Expressions to Phrases
“The Language of Math”
The purpose of this lesson is to provide a
link between Language and Math.
 To do this effectively, we must be able to
translate words in mathematical
expressions.

What is our purpose?????
Vocabulary

Variable: a letter that stands for a value

Algebraic expression: a mathematical sentence
with at least one variable- Know what it represents!

Numerical expression: a mathematical sentence
with only numbers and operation symbols

Translating Expressions: writing algebraic
expressions from word phrases.
This lesson focuses on using language to create
algebraic expressions.
Words show us what operation to use.
What do you think of when you hear
 Sum?
 Difference?
 In all?
 More than?
 What is your objective today???
We are using language to create math.

Melinda goes bowling on Saturday afternoons. She bowls
three games and pays for shoe rental.
What happens when she goes bowling???
She rents shoes. She bowls three games.
We are given the amount for her shoe rental on the chart. Let’s use g for
games.

2 + 12 = $14
We wrote phrases for algebraic
expressions.
 We translated expressions into phrases.

Tonight’s homework will practice this skill!
Will we use this???
Absolutely! This year you will learn to write expressions
that represent the problems you are solving!
“Listen” to the words you are
given in your work this year……words
tell you the operation you need to
find your solutions!
