1.5 Distributive Property
Objective: Use the distributive property to
evaluate expressions. Use the distributive
property to simplify algebraic expressions.
Standards:
Think about it:
Instant Replay Video Games sells new and
used games. During a sale, the first 8
customers each bought a bargain game and a
new release. To calculate the total sales for
these customers, you can use the distributive
property.

$9.95
$14.95
$24.95
$34.95
Can you think of 2 different ways to find the
total sales?
What is the
Distributive
Property?
a(b + c) = ab + ac
a(b – c) = ab – ac
Example 1:
Grace walks 5 days a week. She walks at a
fast rate for 7 minutes and cools down for 2
minutes. Find the total number of minutes
she walks in a week.
Example 2:
Use the distributive property to rewrite
12(98). Then evaluate.
What is a term?
A number, variable, or a product/quotient of
numbers and variables.
Ex: x, a3, 3x2y
What is like terms
Multiple terms that contain the same
variables that have the same power.
Ex: 3x3 and -7x3
What is
An expression with no like terms and no
considered
parentheses.
simplest Form
Example 3:
Simplify so it’s in simplest form.
a. 12(y + 3)
b. 4(y² + 8y + 2)
c. 3x3 + 5x – 2(x – 4x2) + 7x2
Sum It Up
Imagine you’re helping another student on the
phone simplify the following problem. Write
out, in words, how you would describe it to
them.
4(x – 3) + 5
