Today, we will subtract numbers in the thousands.
CFU
What are we going to do today?
Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge
In subtraction, regrouping is moving a group of numbers to the next lower place value.
• You have to regroup when the bottom digit1 in a column is greater than the top digit.

3rd Grade Number Sense 2.1 (4Q)
Find the sum or difference of two whole numbers between 0 and 10,000.
Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only.
Concept Development
To subtract means to take away.
• The answer to a subtraction problem is called the difference.
• To set up subtraction, line up the numbers by place value, with the greater number on top.
Example: Mrs. Reyes’ class is collecting soda
cans. So far, the class has collected 1,638 cans.
Today, Mrs. Reyes sent 254 cans to the recycling
plant.

How many cans does the class have now?
When we subtract 254 from 1,638 the difference
is 1,384. The class now has 1,384 cans.

Read the following real-life subtraction problem:
Jill has 1,364 stamps. She sells 145 stamps. How many stamps does Jill have left?
On your whiteboards, write how many stamps Jill started with.
On your whiteboards, write how many stamps were taken away.
Which of the following shows the setup of the subtraction problem above? How do you know?
