How to use a number line
• A number line is used to show the distance from zero!
•A number line can help you to add and subtract!

To solve an addition problem:
Start at the first number in the problem.
Then, move forward/up (right) as many “jumps” as the
second number.
Example: 3+1= _4_
Put your finger or pencil at 3.
Then jump ahead 1 spot!
The number you land on is your answer!

Then, move backward/down (left) as many “jumps” as
the second number.
Example: 6-2= _4_
Put your finger or pencil at 6.
Then jump backwards 2 spots!
