remember to write the numbers in
straight columns.
Pay attention to which operation you
are being asked to solve.
Always start working with the ones
place.
Chapter 2 Vocabulary
* addends= two or more numbers

* difference= the answer to a
subtraction problem
* sum= the answer to an
addition problem

Multiply Whole Numbers
Helpful Reminders
Begin by multiplying the ones place. Regroup if
necessary.
Multiply the tens place. Add any regrouped
tens. Regroup if necessary.
Multiply the hundreds. Add any regrouped
hundreds.
When multiplying by a number that has more
than one digit, remember to put down a zero
placeholder and continue with the steps above.
When finished multiplying, add to find the
answer.

Divide By One-Digit
Helpful Reminders
Use basic facts and rounding to decide
where to place the first digit of the
quotient.
Divide then bring down.
Write the remainder (if necessary).
Pay special attention to what you are
doing when there are zeros in the
problem.
Be careful when saying “divided by” or
“divided into”.
