Folk Group
A group of two or more
musicians who perform
music in a traditional
style, usually
accompanied by guitars.
Scottish Dance Band

Instruments used are usually
fiddle, accordion, piano, guitar

Scottish Dances
March
Music with a strong
steady pulse with
two or four beats
in a bar.
Reel
A lively dance with a
fast tempo in simple
time.
Reels are often in
Binary Form
AB sections
Waltz
A dance with three beats in
a bar in simple time. Tempo
can be either slow or fast.
Simple Time
The music has two, three or
four beats in each bar, and
each beat is a crotchet.
Scottish Dances
Jig
A lively dance with a fairly fast
tempo (Allegro)
Is written in compound time.
Hint!
Try saying ‘jiggedy jiggedy’ or
‘strawberry strawberry’ with
the music to decide if you are
listening to a Jig.
Compound Time
The beat is divided into
groups of three. Each Beat is
a quaver beat.

Strathspey
Scotch Snap
A Scottish dance with four beats in a
bar (simple time) and usually
featuring the Scotch snap.
A very short accented
note before a longer.

Usually has a steady tempo.
Dotted Rhythm
A long note followed by a shorter
one or a short note followed by a
longer one, as in a Scotch snap.
Features of Scottish Music
Vamp
A rhythmic
accompaniment with a
bass note played on the
beat and a chord off the
beat. Usually played on
piano or guitar.
Question and Answer
An opening phrase which is
followed by an answer
phrase.
