Vocabulary you will need:
• Frequency: How often something happens in a given
time.
• Frequency table (distribution): is a table that shows
the number of times an event, action, value or
characteristic occurs
• Tally Marks: A set of five lines used to keep track of
the number of something when counting.
How to create a table…
Data Hair: red, brown, black, red, blonde, blonde, black, brown
Data Eyes: green, brown, blue, blue, green, brown, brown, brown
Step 1:
Construct a table with
3 columns, in the
first column put
you data in if
number put
ascending order
(least to greatest)

Step two:
Go through your data and put tally marks
next to each category as they are
repeated.

Line Plot
Line Plot
• Define: A line plot involves counts
(frequency) of numerical data (typically
whole numbers). A line plot consists of a
number line with X's located above the
occurring numbers. A grid can be used as
a backdrop if desired.
• Steps:
– Draw a number line with the values that range
from least to greatest
– For each value in the set above place an X
above the corresponding number
Line Plot Example
Data: Pairs of red socks they own:
0,1,1,3,1,2,0,1,1,1,2,0,1,2,5
