Making Music
Music is a set of pleasing sounds. Sound can only be
made when something vibrates.
Musical instruments are used to make music.
Stringed Instruments
Musical instruments are divided into three basic groups.
One group is the stringed instruments.
The strings of these instruments are
vibrated by either strumming them by hand
or rubbing them with a bow.
The pitch is changed by changing the length of the string.
The loudness is changed by the energy applied to the strings.
Wind Instruments
Another group is the wind instruments.
These instruments are vibrated by forcing air
though them. Wind instruments are divided
into two subgroups. The woodwinds
and the brass.
The pitch is changed by changing the length the air is traveling.
The loudness is changed by the energy applied by the air.
Percussion Instruments
The last group is the percussion instruments.
These instruments are vibrated by
striking them.
The pitch is changed by changing by the size of the instrument.
The loudness is changed by the energy used to hit the instrument .
