Music in S4
North Berwick High School
Consists of 3 elements
• Performing – on 2 instruments (accounts
for 60% of the course)
• Understanding Music (40% 0f the
course)
• Composing (PASS/FAIL)
Performing
• You will be learning pieces on 2
instruments at Grade 3 level or above
• Performances will be assessed by your
teacher when the pieces are ready. Some
will be recorded.
• You will be given regular feedback on how
to improve
• You will keep reflections of areas of
strength and areas for development
Understanding Music
• This element is taught in units focusing on
different periods/styles.
• You will learn through listening to audio
examples, watching film clips and playing
music
Understanding Music
• You will demonstrate your understanding
of musical instruments, styles and musical
concepts by responding to either live or
recorded music
• You will develop skills in reading and
writing music
Composing
• You will compile a folio of ideas and
exercises in composing
• You will compose at least 1 piece during
the year.
• Some kind of performance plan or score is
needed to guide the listener through the
piece
• The piece (s) needs to be recorded
How often will I get each
element of the course?
• During the year the balance of the 3
elements will vary.
• Sometimes a composing activity will relate
to a listening unit that we are studying.
You get Music 3 periods each week
• You need to bring music and instruments
to every lesson. Also a ring binder.
Formal Assessments
• A performance examination (February)
consisting of a programme of 8 minutes (split
between two instruments). A visiting Assessor
will come into school to assess you (Nat 5) or
will be assessed by your teacher (Nat 4). 60%
of overall mark.
• A listening paper (May) to assess your
knowledge and understanding of music, music
concepts and musical literacy (theory). 40% of
overall mark.
Homework
• Performing – you are expected to practise at
least 5 times a week for a minimum of 15
minutes on each instrument.

• Understanding – you will be given
musical concepts to research. Try and
listen to wide variety of music, and go to
concerts. Listen out for musical
instruments and concepts in your favourite
music.

• Composing - you will be given regular
individual targets to work on at certain
times of the year
What will I need?
• A ring binder with dividers, for course
notes and music
• Pen, and pencil with eraser on the end for
composing
• Access to instruments (you may ask to
use the department at break and/or
lunchtime if necessary)
Expectations
• Arrive on time
• No eating in class
• Music folder, and instrument where
necessary to be brought to all lessons
• Respectful attitude and working to best of
ability
• Completing homework on time

• Enjoy the course!
• Work hard, and remember you get out of a
course what you put into it!
• Try to get involved in as much music
making as you can, in and out of school.
• Always ask your teacher if you are not
clear about anything, or want some extra
help – it’s what we’re here for!
