Transcript File-sharing is Like Totally Cool

Take a moment to think about the electronic gadgets you use on
a daily basis. Do you face digital dilemmas when using the
computer, your mp3 player, or even when you write a paper
for a school assignment? Students face digital dilemmas on a
regular basis, whether they know it or not.
Do you know someone who has copied software illegally? copied
a song without properly purchasing it? written words for a
paper and claimed them as their own? In each of these
situations, there is an ethical and a non-ethical approach.
Continue with this WebQuest to determine how digital
dilemmas effect you.

You are a staff writer for the Lone Peak Crusader. Your editor
has asked you (along with your partner) to write an article
about software and music piracy. As in all journalism, you will
need to do research on this topic. You will need to find out
what laws exist on music and software copying, sharing,
downloading, and distributing. You may want to investigate
articles of actual court cases. Your article will help students
stop participating in activities that break laws and/or school
policies. Further, your article should encourage students to
obtain software and music files lawfully.

Each partner will research the Internet to gain an understanding of software and
media piracy, take notes and record the URLs for the sites you visit. The links
listed on the resources page will help you as you begin your research. You may
use information from these sites, however, you must also include information
from four websites of your own. Complete the guided worksheet to help you as

Reflect on the research you have completed and the article you
have written. Are you better informed on the laws that apply
to the digital dilemmas in our world? Did you read current
events about legislation and/or trials on computer file sharing,
plagiarism, copyright, etc.? Have you made a commitment to
give credit where credit is due? Take a moment to think about
where you stand on the issue of digital ethics and write a one
paragraph reflection. Submit the reflection to your instructor.
