Parents’ Information
Evening
Year 2
Miss Booth & Miss Dyke
Mrs Dunne, Mrs Botterill, and Mrs Spensley.
KS1 Curriculum & Testing
• As a school we are now implementing the new
curriculum.
• Children will be assessed throughout the year by
teachers at the end of a unit of work
• Year 2 sit SATs during May. This forms part of our
assessment but levels are teacher assessed.
Reading
• Please try to listen to your child read
as often as possible.
• Don’t worry if the reading books
appear easy.
• Don’t worry if your child is asked
to re-read some books.
• Please comment on your child’s
reading.
Phonics
• In Year 2 we continue with phonics lessons.
• Please see the KS1 Hub for lots of phonics
games.
• ‘Say It, Spell It’ words, Tricky words
• There is a list of the 100 HFWs and 200
common words in the back of each child’s
homework book.
Spelling
• Spelling Test is on Tuesdays.
• After the test, children will be given their new
spellings to learn for the following Tuesday.
• Sometimes spellings will be practised in class but
will still need to be learnt at home.
• Children are also asked to complete 6 spelling
sentences in addition to their homework.
Homework
• Homework will be given on a Friday . It may
be Numeracy, Literacy or Topic related.
• Sometimes children will be asked to find
things out or bring things in from home.
• Homework will be collected in on a
Wednesday.
ICT
• Class Blog on website.
(Please encourage your child to
comment on our class blogs but they
should not include their surname.)
• Purple Mash home access.
• KS1 hub.
• Ipads, classmates and computers.
Handwriting
• After initial practice children
will begin to learn joined up
handwriting in Year 2.

Secure with year group phonic expectations.
Recognise simple recurring literary language.
Read ahead to help with fluency and expression.
Comment on plot, setting & characters in familiar & unfamiliar stories.
Recount main themes and events.
Comment on structure of the text.
Use commas, question marks and exclamation marks to vary expression.
Read aloud with expression and intonation.
Recognise:
- commas in lists
- apostrophe of omission and possession (singular noun)
• Identify past/present tense and why the writer has used a tense.
• Use content and index to locate information.
Year 2 Non Negotiables: Writing
Writing
• Write different kinds of sentence: statement, question, exclamation, command.
• Use expanded noun phrases to add description and specification.
• Write using subordination (when, if, that, because) and co-ordination (or, and, but).
• Correct and consistent use of present tense & past tense.
• Correct use of verb tenses.
• Write with correct and consistent use of:
- capital letters and full stops
- question marks
- exclamation marks
• Use commas in a list.
• Use apostrophe to mark omission and singular possession in nouns.
• Write under headings.
• Write lower case letters correct size relative to one another.
• Show evidence of diagonal and horizontal strokes to join handwriting.
Year 2 Non Negotiables: Maths
Mathematics
• Compare and order numbers up to 100 and use < > =.
• Read and write all numbers to 100 in digits & words.
• Say 10 more/less than any number to 100.
• Count in steps of 2, 3 & 5 from zero and in 10s from any number (forwards and backwards)
• Recall and use multiplication & division facts for 2, 5 & 10 tables.
• Recall and use +/- facts to 20.
• Derive and use related facts to 100.
• Recognise place value of any 2-digit number.
• Add & subtract two 2-digit numbers and three 1-digit number.
• Recognise and use inverse (+/-).
• Calculate and write multiplication & division calculations using multiplication tables.
• Recognise, find, name and write 1/3; 1/4; 2/4; 3/4.
• Write and recognise equivalence of simple fractions.
• Tell time to five minutes, including quarter past/to.
PE
• PE kit must be kept in school.
• Outdoor PE kit – Trainers, Jogging
Bottoms.
• Your child must be able to take
their earrings out themselves.
• Clothes must be named.
Food
• Healthy eating – fruit is available during
morning playtime.
• Snack on a Friday – 25p each. No more
than 50p please.
Water
•Please provide your child with a water
bottle that will stay in school from
Monday to Friday.
•Water will be changed daily.
Performances
Drop Off and Collection
Please see your child into the line and allow them to come
into school on their own. On collection (at 3:00pm) your
child will not be allowed to leave until they see their adult
on the school playground.
Parents Evening
