Week 7 IT 24
Morphemes which add a ‘number’ meaning
•This teacher led activity aims to introduce children to prefixes which
carry a meaning related to number.
•At the start of the presentation, pictures of cycles appear with
different numbers of wheels, and these are linked with the prefixes
‘uni’ ‘bi’ and ‘tri’.
•Teachers will need to give an explanation to go alongside this, to
explain that some beginnings of words give a clue about number e.g.
triangle means 3 sided.
•The answer sheet (see next slide) needs to be printed off and given to
the children prior to the lesson.
•Further ‘number’ morpheme words are given, and children are asked to
write ‘how many’ is meant by the prefix each time. This is prompted by
the appearance of a pencil.
•Children are asked what gave them the clue for this number and
feedback is then given on screen of the prefix and it’s number meaning,
and a picture of the word appears e.g. ‘unicorn’, ‘tripod’.
